Gameaddict.org.uk - Conclusion
Since Gameaddict.org.uk was launched in August 2005 we have carried out extensive research within online gaming environments, namely World of Warcraft, EvE Online and Anarchy Online. This live research has been complimented by our online survey, which has given us valuable statistical information on the current trends of online gamers.
Through this research and study we have recognised that gaming addiction is not so much a problem caused by gaming excessively but a bi-product of social or personal issues that affect the individual. Many individuals find an escape in MMORPGS where they can take on a persona that differs greatly to that of their real self, the open ability to be someone else is very appealing to someone who is suffering from personal issues in their real life. This can also be said for people who are alcoholics or drug users, the chemical effects of which give the individual an escape from reality.
Unless the underlying issues are dealt with, then the need to escape into an online reality will remain.
The large majority of individuals who have contacted Gameaddict over the last few months have been referred to seek professional medical advice because the problems expressed are NOT the result of excessive game play but of other issues. It is through this response that we have reached the decision to cease Gameaddicts current remit for providing addiction support.
Due to this conclusion Gameaddict will be administering a redevelopment of the site to reflect the decision made by the team.
